It was founded and will remain a centre for educating and training pupils irrespective of religion, caste and colour. From the very beginning the education is characterized by thoroughness, high principles and freedom. The students are helped to grow in responsibility, self-reliance and human maturity so that they find meaning and purpose in their life and is inspired to live and work for the building up of a just and fraternal society. Hence the idea of service is set before the pupils who are trained to be concerned for others, to be aware of their needs and to make sacrifices when necessary, to share what they have with the less privileged.

What We offer

In the year 1987 the diocese of Jalpaiguri purchased the present property of Mount Carmel School and started a primary school for the tribal children from the nearby teagardens. It was a residential school from its beginning. Meanwhile the Carmelite Fathers of the South Kerala Province (OCD order of discalced Carmelites) had begun their missionary endears in West Bengal. When Bishop James Toppo learned that the Carmelite Friars have opened their mission in the Kolkata Archdiocese, invitation was send to take up missions in his diocese. The Provincial Rev. Fr. Xavier Jayaraj OCD considered the matter as an obligation and sent Fr. Albert Peter OCD to discover the possibilities of setting up a Carmelite mission in Jalpaiguri diocese. After four days of journey from Kerala, Fr. Albert reached Dhupguri -“The House of Light” on 20th February 1998, to spread the true light of missionary aspect of Christ. The mission was officially inaugurated by Very Rev. Fr. Xavier Jayaraj, the Provincial in the presence of His Exc.

Ellency Bishop James Toppo on 20th September 2001. Thus the primary school started by the diocesan priests came under the management of the Carmelite Fathers. In the following year Fr. Albert Peter OCD built a small primary school in the very same place of the present school to accommodate at least 60 to 70 students.

The present school buildings’ foundation stone was laid in 2001 and when the ground floor was ready for use the regular classes were shifted to the new building, thanks to the generous support of Manos Unidas, Spain. From the year 2005 Mount Carmel school is collaborating with the foundation of L’albero della vita in a sponsorship programme for the tribal children. The English medium follows the system of education recommended by Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE) and the school will speed the initiatives to be affiliated to the same. At present the school has reached up to class VIII.

From the beginning of its establishment of Mount Carmel School, Dhupguri had been an abode of learning for the tribal children from the nearby tea gardens, the “anawim Yahweh”, (poor of the Lord). The school fosters the all-round growth and development of each student to his/her fullest potential- spiritually, intellectually and physically. It will guide him/her in the development of a sound value system and will inculcate in him/her a deep love and appreciation for his/her culture, community and country. The school tries to create an atmosphere in which the students find scope within their own cultural milieu to reflect on their life and develop not only in knowledge and skills but also in wisdom which is the fruit of life and its lessons. Mount Carmel School is a school with a difference; it accommodates even the least cared of the society. To note in a sentence, Mount Carmel school is an institution which carries the “dreams of a child.”
